Administrative/Biographical history: Formed under the Local Government Act 1888, Glamorgan County Council took over many administrative duties of the Court of Quarter Sessions, such as responsibility for roads, bridges, county rates, county buildings, the police force, and licensing. In 1889, the administrative and welfare responsibilities were transferred to the first elected county council. Further responsibilities in secondary education, technical education and agriculture were added. Local government was reorganised in 1974, and the Glamorgan County Council came to an end in March of that year: under the Local Government Act 1972, when the county of Glamorgan was divided into three new counties, Mid, South and West Glamorgan.
