CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: John Vivian Hughes of Port Talbot, Neath Port Talbot, is a local historian whose published work includes Margam Castle (Swansea, 1998), The history of libraries in the Port Talbot district (Port Talbot, 2000) and The wealthiest commoner: C. R. M. Talbot, M.P., F.R.S. (1803-1890) (Port Talbot, [1978]). He has also accumulated historical material relating mainly to Western Glamorgan. Adelina Patti (1843-1919) was a world-renowned singer who bought the Craig-y-nos Estate in the parish of Ystradgynlais, Brecknockshire, in 1878. She married her third husband, Baron Rolf Cederström, in 1899. She died on 27 September 1919 and was buried in Paris. David John 'Afan' Thomas (1881-1928) was a composer from Cwmavon, Glamorgan. Sally Young (fl. 1768-1811) of Bristol was the Quaker wife of Edward Young and kept a journal relating to her family in Bristol and Neath.
