Level of description: Fonds

Extent: 2 boxes

Name of creator(s): Brewer family, Newport, Gwent

Administrative/Biographical history: Families using the surname Brewer have lived in and about Newport, Monmouthshire, since at least 1560. The Brewer family were prominent in the life of Newport during the 19th cent., particularly in the field of medicine. Members of the family included Charles Brewer (fl. 1828) of Maes-glas in the parish of St Woollos, esq., William Brewer (1774-1863) of Newport, surgeon, medical officer to the Newport Board of Guardians, and Edgar Brewer (1817-1904) his son, and William Henry Brewer (d. 1883) of Blackwood, surgeon, and Elizabeth (nee Beaumont) his wife (m. c. 1853), the daughter of Joseph Beaumont, agent to the Llanarth Court estate.

Scope and content/abstract: The earliest deeds, [c. 1668]-1750, have no obvious link to the Brewer family, unless Cecilia, the daughter of George Morgan who made his will in 1750, is also Cecilia (1745-1816), wife of John Brewer ([c. 1743]-1813) of Newport, surgeon. The remaining deeds, 1828-1883, are mainly marriage settlements, and appointments of new trustees to the settlements. Most of the remaining papers are the personal papers of individual members of the family, mainly certificates relating to the medical educations of members of the Brewer family, 1864-1872. There are also portraits and a photograph album, [19th century]-[20th century].
