Administrative/Biographical history: Captain John Jones (d. [1860]) of Porthmadog, Caernarfonshire, was the captain of the schooner William Alexander during the 1850s. He was married to Margaret Jones. Their son, John Jones (b. [1844]), was a pupil at Farn Hill School, near Chester, Cheshire, 1856-1859, but also accompanied his father for lengthy periods on the William Alexander, 1858-1860. Mrs Mary Evans (d. [1866]) lived at the Ship Inn, Porthmadog.


Scope and content/abstract: Correspondence of Captain John Jones, Margaret Jones and John Jones, 1856-1859, and miscellaneous correspondence, 1850-1928; certificates of character and discharge of John Jones junior, 1858-1860; miscellaneous account books relating to Porthmadog, 1828-1895; papers relating to the estate of Captain Jones, 1861-1895; receipts for wages and effects of crew members of the William Alexander, 1861; papers relating to the settlement of the estate of Mrs Mary Evans, 1866-1875, and receipts for rent paid by her representatives, 1866-1893.
