CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Pierce Davies of Cwmllan, Beddgelert, Caernarfonshire (later of Portmadoc in the same shire) was a deacon of Tabernacle chapel (C.M.), Portmadoc. He was a strong character who possessed the ability to deliver memorable addresses.
His son, Jonathan Davies was born in Beddgelert in 1857. He lived in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merionethshire for a while, where he was a member of the Tabernacle chapel and came under the influence of Rev. T.J. Wheldon. In 1876 he left Blaenau Ffestiniog and in 1877 began work as a trader in the slate industry in Portmadoc. He became a member of the local chapel, Tabernacle, and by 1891 he was a deacon as well as the chapel secretary. In 1923 he was promoted to the post of President of the (C.M.) Association in North Wales. In addition to his religious commitments, Jonathan Davies was also a member of the Board of Governors of Portmadoc County School and a vice-chairman on the bench of local Justices of the Peace. He married the daughter of John Hughes, a deacon of Tabernacle chapel, Blaenau Ffestiniog. They lived in Bryn Eirian, Portmadoc and had two daughters and two sons, Ithel Davies and John Pierce Davies (1886-1908).
David Jones was an auctioneer of Tremadog, Caernarfonshire in the mid 19th century.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: The collection comprises of the diaries of Pierce Davies, 1868 - 1881 in which references are made to the weather, Cwmllan quarry, relatives in America, religious meetings and matters. The notebooks of Jonathan Davies, 1872 - 1906 mostly contain notes on sermons. One apparently stray item is included, namely the diary of a David Jones, auctioneer of Tremadog, 1849.

System of arrangement: The collection is incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts. The papers have been arranged according to creator and then chronologically.
