CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Cymru Fydd (Wales to Be) society was established in London and Liverpool, primarily as a cultural and literary organisation and had many branches in Wales. However, in the 1890's, a group led by David Lloyd George attempted to turn the society into an umbrella organisation for the nationalist movement which was demanding a separate political institution for Wales.
According to the first minute book of the Llanfairpwll branch of Cymdeithas Cymru Fydd, the aim of the organisation was to cultivate the minds of its members through literature, history, politics and music. The first meeting was held on 13 September 1887 and twelve members attended the meeting. The first chairman of the society was John Morris-Jones.
