CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Herbert G. Wright (1888-1962) was Professor of English at the University College of North Wales, 1919-1954. He was a scholar of distinction and wide-ranging interests, not least of which, as these papers show, was Anglo-Welsh literary relations, on which he wrote a large number of articles in the 1920's and 1930's.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: Material comprises drafts, transcripts and offprints of articles, research notes and correspondence: letters addressed to Professor H. G. Wright, from former students of his (Robert Hamilton, P. F. Swinnerton and D. W. Turberville) serving abroad in the armed forces, 1941-1944; transcript by H.G. Wright of a pamphlet by Algernon Charles Swinburne entitled The Saviour of Society: Two Sonnets and a Controversy (1909); 'Thomas Love Peacock and Wales': drafts of the introduction to a projected edition by H. G. Wright of The Misfortunes of Elphin, and a group of papers (notes, correspondence etc.), the result of research into Peacock's connections with Wales by G. J. Williams of Coed Menai, Bangor; material collected by G. J. Williams of Coed Menai, Bangor, for a study of Shelley's connections with North Wales; 'An Anglo-Welsh Anthology': typescript with handwritten notes of a work intended for publication; 'English writers and Wales (1770-1900)': drafts of a series of articles, with a general introduction, on various writers, including Michael Faraday, Arthur Hugh Clough, Reginald Heber, Anna Seward, Wordsworth, Tennyson and Coleridge; 'Cowper's translations from Madame Guyon': incomplete drafts of an article; 'The vagabond theme in literature': draft of an article or lecture; material collected for a study of the writings of Robert Potter (1721-1804), poet and politician; 'The sense of historical continuity in English literature': draft of an unpublished book, containing studies of Scott, Housman, Masefield, Drinkwater, Kipling, Belloc, Doughty, Edward Thomas and Hudson; 'Some great book-collectors': draft of an article; 'Mandeville's Travels': draft of an article; typescript of 'The Emperor Otho' by Sir Henry Herbert, edited by Herbert G. Wright; bibliographical list of articles by H. G. Wright, not including those on Anglo-Welsh relations; offprints of articles by H.G. Wright which appeared in the Review of English Studies and The Modern Language Review, 1927-1959; copies of The Welsh Outlook, 1922-1931, containing articles by H. G. Wright on Anglo-Welsh relations; photocopy of a British Museum Manuscript 29494 used by H. G. Wright in preparing the text of A Seventeenth-century modernisation of the first three books of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, 1960.
