CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: R. H. Evans was a man of many interests. For a time he was a member of the Agriculture Department at Bangor University and for years he was senior lecturer in Agriculture at the University of Reading. He became the first Principal of Madryn Castle Farm School, and was a frequent judge in the Royal Dairy and Royal Agricultural Shows. After retiring from the Principalship, he set up as a licensed valuer, and was often asked to act as arbitrator between other valuers, not only in Caernarvonshire, but in Anglesey, and even as far afield as Breconshire. Probably his chief work was to assist in the negotiations for the exchange of properties between the Broom Hall and Glynllifon estates. He took the lead in forming the Lleyn Livestock Improvement Society about 1915 and the South Caernarvonshire Farmers' Association in 1920. It was he also who in around 1920 drew up the memorandum on the proposed light railway for the Lleyn peninsula. He became a valuable member of the Caernarvonshire County Council and eventually of its Records Committee, which did such doughty work - revolutionary in fact - in bringing the rich records of the county under control and classification. Years before that he had been interested in the tours of the Cambrian Archaeologicals, acted as Lleyn correspondent for the Ancient Monuments Board, and wrote several letters to the offices of the National Museum of Wales about ancient material he had come across. He was also deeply interested in books and manuscripts and was a great benefactor of the Library of the University of Wales, Bangor.
