Administrative/Biographical history: The Rathbones of Llandegfan, Anglesey were a prominent family in north Wales. Mary Frances Rathbone was an influential figure in a number of social and educational projects in the area. She was the driving force in the North Wales Branch Association for Reconstruction, which sought to promote recovery and prosperity after the First World War (Sir John Morris-Jones was also a member) and in another organisation with similar interests, known as the Pilgrim Trust.
Miss Rathbone was a great niece of William Rathbone MP (1819-1902), one of the founders of the University of Wales, Bangor and was herself a benefactor of the university and an active member of its council. In 1934 she received an honorary degree from the University of Wales. She died in 1937.


Scope and content/abstract: Large folio volume entitled Sketches and Notes of the Parish of Llandegfan and its Worthies, compiled by Mary F. Rathbone and possibly other members of her family, 1894-1954. It contains sketches, notes, photographs and newspaper cuttings on the parish of Llandegfan and well-known inhabitants, including: photograph of Margaret M. Verney, 1907; photographs of various members of the Rathbone family with a memoir of Richard Reynolds Rathbone published in the North Wales Chronicle, 18 June 1898; programme of the opening meeting of the village hall, Llandegfan, 1904;newspaper reports concerning the gift of Llandegfan village hall to the villagers by Mrs Rathbone, the opening of the hall and englynion composed and recited on that occasion; photograph of Llandegfan Parish Council, 1908; photographs of R.W. Roberts, Chairman of Anglesey County Council, 1903, the Bishop of Bangor - Watkin Herbert Williams, Lord Stanley of Alderley, Sir Ellis Jones Ellis Griffith MP; history of the Calvinistic Methodist and Baptist Churches of Llandegfan; coloured lithograph of the Menai Straits from Garth Point; history of schools and scholars in the Llandegfan area; notes on some houses in Llandegfan including Craig y Don, Rhianfa, Glyn Garth and Glan y Menai; photograph and description of the industrial training ship, The Clio; short account, including a newspaper report of Arts and Crafts in Llandegfan and Anglesey; photographs of sites around Llandegfan taken by F. L. Schwabe; photographs of some Llandegfan inhabitants; account of the first Llandegfan flower show, 1905; various newspaper cuttings and notes relating to Llandegfan; account of the North Wales Heroes Memorial in the parish of Llandegfan; various items concerning the 50th anniversary of the village hall, plans for its modernisation and other parish business together with other newspaper cuttings relating to Llandegfan.
