CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The idea of the Amlwch Literary and Scientific Institution appears to have originated in 1837 with William Fricker, the brewer, in a letter to Mr Greathead of the N. P. Bank. It seemed quite natural for such a society to be founded at Amlwch with its variegated population. The most prominent characters in its records are invariably English immigrants to Amlwch or descendants of such. The Rev. Morris Williams (Nicander) and his curates were also amongst the subscribers.
The balance between literature and science was kept pretty even.
