Administrative/Biographical history: In 1830, Samuel Sandbach (1769-1851), of Liverpool, Lancashire, bought the Hafodunos estate, Llangernyw, Denbighshire, from the Rev. Thomas Hugh Clough, the son of the heiress of the Lloyd family of Hafodunos. Samuel Sandbach was sheriff of Denbighshire 1839, and sometime mayor of Liverpool. Samuel was succeeded by his son, Henry Robertson Sandbach (d. 1895). In 1855, he married Elizabeth Charlotte Williams (1827-189[]), daughter of Martin Williams, of Old Hope, in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica, and of Bryngwyn, in the parish of Llanfechain, Montgomeryshire, the son of Martin Williams (c.1723-86) of the parish of St James, Jamaica. Henry Robertson Sandbach was succeeded by his son, Samuel Sandbach (1856-1928), who was succeeded in turn by his brother Major-General Arthur Edmund Sandbach CB, DSO (1859-1928), of Bryngwyn. In 1902, Major-General Sandbach married Ina (b. 1867), daughter of George Sholto Gordon Douglas-Pennant (1836-1907), 2nd Baron Penrhyn, and left issue.


Scope and content/abstract: Papers of Henry Robertson Sandbach, his second wife Elizabeth Charlotte, and their children and marriage partners, particularly Ina, wife of Arthur Edmund Sandbach, and the sisters of Elizabeth Charlotte, namely Katherine ('Kate') Williams and Frances ('Fanny') Bentinck; and papers of Major-General Arthur Edmund Sandbach, including official and personal correspondence relating to his colonial service in Egypt, Sudan, Burma, India, South Africa and Ireland 1877-1928, including as military secretary to the Viceroy of India 1898-1899, and relating to the 59th Division at Dublin during the Easter Rising in Ireland 1916. The archive also includes tour notes and journals on the Continent, [c.1825]-1897, Bryngwyn farm accounts, cash books, etc., 1813-1929, correspondence, accounts and papers relating to the Williams family's Old Hope estate in Jamaica, 1703-1902, and papers relating to the Hafodunos estate, 1903-1912.
