CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: In 1930, the Radnorshire Society was established. Its interests are in archaeology and history of Radnorshire with lectures, research and field trips being organised by an executive committee and the field group. The Llandrindod Wells Golf Club was established in 1905. In 1906 they started playing. It was decided in 1904 to form the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society. The first permanent show was established at Llanelwedd in 1963. The Women's Institute in the early 20th century, aimed to promote the role of rural women in meeting the changing needs of an agricultural economy, using community action and solidarity. Its aim was to promote "better living" in rural areas by encouraging the use of more advanced methods in animal husbandry, horticulture and domestic economy, through technical education and training. This was based on the work of Sir Horace Plunkett, agricultural pioneer and founder of the first Agricultural Organisation Society. There are records relating to Women's Institutes in Radnorshire and records relating to the Radnorshire Nursing Association. The Llandrindod Wells and District Nursing Association was wound up in 1963 and its records were transferred to the Radnorshire Nursing Association. The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921. It is the leading charity in the UK that is providing financial, social and emotional support to people in the Armed Forces or to those that have been. The records are relating to the Rhayader Branch. There is material relating to the Elderly Club in Newbridge on Wye, Brecknockshire, the Radnor Battery Association, Radnor, Radnorshire. The Home Guard was formed in 1940 and in June the number of volunteers was over one million. The aim was to delay an enemy invasion for as long as possible. The records are relating to the Radnor Home Guard.
