CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Brecon Independent College was established in c.1839 as a place of education for Congregationalists. By 1900 the college had become the Oddfellows Hall, used by the Brecon Loyal Saint John's Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. The Independent Order of Oddfellows is a fraternal organisation with branches throughout the UK and worldwide. The name Oddfellows was originally used to describe a society that accepted members from different trades and walks of life who came together to provide mutual aid.
