CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Dr Clare Taylor was born in 1934. Originally from the West Indies, she became a lecturer in history at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. She specialised in colonial history and the history of the West Indies, and published widely on these subjects. She has since retired, and now lives in Kent.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: The archive contains typescript copies of anti-slavery letters, dated 1832-1870, taken by Dr Clare Taylor whilst conducting research for her book, British and American Abolitionists: An Episode in Transatlantic Understanding. The letters are from prominent Quakers, Unitarians and Scottish Abolitionists, and include British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society letters. Amongst the correspondents are William Lloyd Garrison; George Thompson; Richard D Webb; Harriet Martineau; Maria Weston Chapman; Robert Purvis; John B Estlin; Mary Estlin; Samuel May Jnr. and Elizabeth Pease Nichol.
