Administrative/Biographical history: Penmaenmawr Urban District Council was created in 1897. Its predecessors were the Dwygyfylchi Local Board and Penmaenmawr Local Board. Urban District Councils were administered by committees and by appointed officers including a clerk, treasurer, medical officer of health, surveyor and sanitary inspector. UDCs took over responsibility for local sanitation from the local sanitary authorities and their responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. In 1974, it became part of the Aberconwy Borough Council.


Scope and content/abstract: Records of Penmaenmawr Urban District Council, 1866-1974, including general minute books, 1866-1974; committee minute books, 1890-1969; general ledgers, 1925-1969; rate records, 1867-1972; accounts, 1925-1971; financial statements, 1892-1942; special registers, 1899-1964; clerks department, 1844-1967; electricity department, 1939-1948; surveyors and public health department, 1908-1973; and a copy of the Chester to Holyhead Railway Act 1844; Minutes, accounts and letter books, Dwygyfylchi Local Board, 1880-1890; minutes and letter books, Penmaenmawr UDC committees, 1895-1900; Penmaenmawr UDC correspondence, 1928-1938, and rental, 1939-1941; plans of drainage sewerage and water supply works, promenade works, housing, roads, etc. 1878-1968; OS maps showing roads, footpaths etc., (maps printed 1900-1951, annotations undated [1900-1974]); and official photographs, [1880]-1932, schools, opening ceremonies etc.
