CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Betws y Coed Urban District Council (UDC), Caernarfonshire, was established in 1898 under the Local Government Act 1894. UDCs took over responsibility for sanitation from the local sanitary authorities, and their responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a clerk, treasurer, medical officer of health, surveyor and sanitary inspector. Betws y Coed UDC was the smallest in Britain, with a population of 708 in 1898. Betws y Coed UDC was abolished in 1974, becoming part of Aberconwy District Council.
