CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The castle and town of Conway, Caernarfonshire, was founded in 1283 by Edward I. The Borough was granted charters by Edward III in 1331 and Elizabeth I in 1561. It was administered by a Corporation consisting of a mayor, aldermen and the borough's burgesses. In 1821 the Conway Bridge Commissioners oversaw the construction of the suspension bridge across the river and continued to administer it and raise tolls into the 20th century. In 1876, Conway adopted the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act 1835, resulting in the old Corporation being replaced by a democratically-elected town council. In 1974 the Borough was abolished, and absorbed into the newly-formed Aberconwy District Council. Mr Albert Wood JP, Deputy Lieutenant, of Bodlendeb, Conway, North Wales, was active in the early 20th century as a benefactor and historian.
