Name of creator(s): Major Francis Jones (1908-1994)


Administrative/Biographical history: Major Francis Jones (1908-1994), genealogist, historian and archivist, was born in Trefin, Pembrokeshire. He worked as an archivist in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the College of Arms; he was County Archivist of Carmarthenshire, 1958-1974, and had a distinguished military career during the Second World War. In 1963, he was made Welsh Herald of Arms Extraordinary. He also held several other posts including that of President of the Cambrian Archaeological Society, and was awarded an honorary MA by the University of Wales. He wrote numerous books and articles on military history and Welsh history and genealogy, including Historic Carmarthenshire Homes and their Families (Newport, Pembrokeshire, 1997). He married Ethel Charles in c. 1931 and they had four children. He died in 1994.


Scope and content/abstract: Pedigrees of Carmarthenshire, Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire families compiled and copied mainly by Francis Jones, [19th century]-[1986]; plans and maps of Pembrey and Llanegwad parishes and of the Glaspant estate, Cilrhedyn, Carmarthenshire, 1772-[1880]; and printed religious works, 1679-[1836].
