Scope and content/abstract: The collection comprises comprises 155 deeds and documents mostly relating to properties in Monmouthshire and dating from the middle of the seventeenth century to the middle of the nineteenth century. There are also a few deeds relating to properties in the parish of Badwell Ash, Suffolk (nos 1-12). Among the more interesting items in this collection are attested copies of deeds relating to the Hanbury Williams family of Coldbrook, including Sir Charles Hanbury Williams (nos 70-98; see also A. A. Locke, The Hanbury Family, 2 vols., 1916). There are also a few deeds relating to the Morgan family of Tredegar.

System of arrangement: Arranged into five files, being small collections of deeds relating to specific properties, while nos 99-155 are largely unrelated deeds and documents: Badwell Ash deeds; Llanddewi Rhytherch deeds; Rudry, co. Glam., and Machen, co. Mon deeds; Hanbury Williams family deeds; and miscellaneous deeds and documents. Except for nos 1-12 all places mentioned in this schedule are in Monmouthshire unless otherwise stated

Archival history:

Immediate source of acquisition: The Clytha Collection was purchased by the Library from the antiquarian Sir Joseph Bradney in 1926.

Related material: This collection appears to have strong links with a much larger collection of deeds and MSS bequeathed to the Library by Bradney in 1932, and not yet fully catalogued. It should be noted that the Clytha collection as described in the Library's Annual Report for 1925-26 (p. 23) does not tally in size with the present collection. It is possible that some deeds may have been removed to the Bradney Collection. However it has not been possible to locate the court rolls for the lordship of Wentllwg mentioned in the report, although the 1652 survey of the lordship is to be found in this collection (see no. 99).
